Tom Kaiman, a graduate of Michigan Technological University (Houghton, MI), received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering while playing Division 1 NCAA Hockey for the MTU Huskies from 1998 to 2002. After graduating Cum Laude in the engineering program, Tom went on to play professional hockey in the AHL and ECHL before starting his engineering and construction career. He began his E&C career as a project engineer for Walton Construction Company LLC, a top 400 Engineering News Record Contractor, headquartered out of Kansas City with a Divisional Office in St. Louis, MO. Tom’s first construction challenge was to design and build the St. Louis Blues Practice Facility in Hazelwood, MO. After this successful venture, Tom was tasked with more responsibility at Walton. During the course of his career at Walton, Tom managed and provided operational oversight for construction projects across the United States ranging in size from $500,000 to $250,000,000. During his tenure, he was promoted on several occasions and by 2009 Tom was leading the St. Louis Divisional office as the Vice President of Operations overseeing 60 staff members and $150,000,000 in annual revenue.
Early in 2010, Tom decided it was time to leave Walton and decided to join S. M. Wilson & Co., a top 400 Engineering News Record Contractor, as a Project Executive and as one of the ten individual shareholders of the company. Tom was tasked with creating S. M. Wilson’s Federal/Milcon Business Unit and was responsible for all sales, project acquisitions, bidding/estimating, and overseeing the execution of the work as it was secured within the business unit. Tom was instrumental in helping to reorganize the company in 2011 and ultimately in January 2012, Tom was promoted to Director of Operations and oversaw all of the construction operations of the business across all of the business units – Healthcare, Education, Federal/Milcon, Industrial, Retail and Commercial. As the operational leader, Tom was responsible for a 75 member staff executing over $200,000,000 in annual revenues. Additionally, Tom oversaw the profit and loss for the operations group, focusing heavily on improving the company through operational performance across the board.
A few of Tom’s academic and professional achievements include the 2008 St. Louis Business Journal’s 30 under 30 distinction, the 2008 Building Design + Construction’s 40 under 40 distinction, National Civil Engineering Honor Society/Chi Epsilon Member, LEED AP BD+C professional, Western Collegiate Hockey Association All-Academic Team- elected three seasons consecutively (2000, 2001, 2002), George McCarthy Performance Award for Scholastic and Academic Achievement (2002), Walton Construction Company Advisory Council to CEO, Member (2005-2009), and S. M. Wilson & Co. Executive Committee (2011 – 2015)
